A Weekend in San Francisco: Two-Day Itinerary

A weekend gives you two full days in San Francisco, which is enough for the waterfront, a cable car, the Golden Gate Bridge and one long afternoon in the neighborhoods. This plan uses the Saturday farmers market at the Ferry Building and the car-free stretch of JFK Drive in Golden Gate Park, which both make weekends a good time to visit.

Saturday morning: the Ferry Building

The Ferry Plaza Farmers Market runs from 8am to 2pm on Saturdays, around the Ferry Building at the foot of Market Street. Go early, before the crowds, and eat breakfast from the stalls or the shops inside the building.

Saturday midday: the waterfront

Walk north along the Embarcadero, or ride the F streetcar, to Pier 39 for the sea lions and the view of Alcatraz. Continue along Fisherman’s Wharf to Hyde Street and take the Powell-Hyde cable car up Russian Hill. If you booked Alcatraz, fit it in here and keep the afternoon light.

Saturday afternoon and evening: North Beach and Chinatown

Get off the cable car near Lombard Street, walk down the crooked block and continue to North Beach. Climb to Coit Tower for the view, then walk south through Chinatown along Grant Avenue and Stockton Street. Have dinner in either neighborhood. Both are busy on Saturday nights, so book ahead if you want a specific restaurant.

Sunday morning: the Golden Gate Bridge

Take Muni’s 28 bus to the Golden Gate Bridge stop and walk out on the east sidewalk. Mornings are often foggy in summer, so if the bridge is hidden, swap the order and come back in the afternoon. See the Golden Gate Bridge guide for hours and viewpoints.

Sunday afternoon: Golden Gate Park

JFK Drive is closed to cars through the eastern part of Golden Gate Park, so Sunday is a good day to walk or rent a bike there. Visit the Japanese Tea Garden, the Conservatory of Flowers or the free observation level in the de Young tower. Then walk out the east end of the park through Haight-Ashbury to Alamo Square and the Painted Ladies.

Sunday evening: the Mission

Finish in the Mission with the murals on Balmy Alley, a burrito and the view from the top of Dolores Park. From 16th Street or 24th Street BART, it is about 30 minutes to SFO, which works if you fly out Sunday night.

Weekend tips

  • Check the San Francisco events calendar before you book. Big festival weekends can double hotel prices.
  • Muni’s $5.70 day pass covers buses and streetcars but not cable cars.
  • Weekend parking near the waterfront and Golden Gate Park fills early. Transit is easier.
  • Pack layers. See what to pack for San Francisco.
