San Francisco is not a late city by big-city standards, and many restaurants close their kitchens by 10pm. There is still a lot to do after dark, especially if you plan around the evening programs at museums and the city’s views.
In this guide
This guide is part of our San Francisco nightlife hub. For daytime plans, start with things to do in San Francisco.
See the lights from Twin Peaks

Twin Peaks gives you the whole city at once, with Market Street running straight down to the Bay Bridge. Drive or take a rideshare up, since the bus leaves you with a steep walk, and bring a warm jacket because the wind is strong. On foggy nights the view can vanish, so check before you go.
Take the Alcatraz night tour
The night tour includes a ferry ride at dusk with the skyline lit up behind you and some evening-only programs on the island. It sells out early. The island is closed for dock repairs from October 26 to November 18, 2026. See our Alcatraz tour guide.
Go to a museum after dark

The Exploratorium on Pier 15 runs After Dark on Thursday nights for visitors 18 and up, and the California Academy of Sciences holds NightLife on Thursday evenings for guests 21 and over. Both have drinks, music and the exhibits without the daytime school groups. Dates and themes vary, so check their calendars.
Walk the Embarcadero

The waterfront promenade from the Ferry Building toward Oracle Park is flat and well lit, with the Bay Bridge lit up above you. It is an easy after-dinner walk.
Hear live jazz or see comedy
SFJAZZ Center in Hayes Valley has concerts most weeks, and small clubs around the city host jazz, comedy and live music. North Beach has a long history of comedy and late bars. Our nightlife hub lists neighborhoods for bars and music.
Catch a game
The Giants play baseball at Oracle Park in China Basin from spring to early fall, and the Warriors play basketball at Chase Center in Mission Bay during the winter season. Night games are a good way to see locals at their loudest.
Eat late in the Mission
The Mission is one of the best places for a late meal, with taquerias that stay open past most restaurants. A burrito after a show is a local habit. See best restaurants in San Francisco.
Ride a cable car after dark
Cable cars run into the evening, and the lines at the turnarounds are much shorter. The Powell-Hyde line has views down to the lit bay. See our cable car guide for details.
Check the events calendar
Seasonal events add a lot to an evening, from the DÃa de los Muertos procession in the Mission to holiday lights in December. See the San Francisco events calendar.
Staying safe at night
Stick to busy, well-lit streets, use rideshares or taxis late at night, and never leave anything visible in a parked car, since car break-ins are common in tourist areas.
