San Francisco is built on more than 40 hills, so a big view is rarely far away. Some lookouts need a steep walk, and others have parking close by. Fog changes everything here, so check the sky before you head up, and bring a jacket because the hilltops are windy.

Twin Peaks

Twin Peaks sits near the center of the city, and its summit looks straight down Market Street to downtown, the Bay Bridge and the East Bay hills. You can drive or take a bus partway and walk up. It is often foggy and cold, even when downtown is clear. Clear evenings, when the city lights come on, are the best time to go.
Coit Tower and Telegraph Hill
The observation deck at the top of Coit Tower has 360-degree views of the bay, Alcatraz and both bridges. The terraces of Pioneer Park around the tower are free and look east over the bay.
Battery Spencer

Battery Spencer is an old gun battery on the Marin side of the Golden Gate Bridge. It looks down on the bridge’s north tower with the city behind it, and it is the classic postcard view. The small parking area fills fast, so go early.
Lands End
The Lands End trail follows the cliffs at the city’s northwest corner, with views of the Golden Gate, the Marin Headlands and the Sutro Baths ruins. The loop is about 3 miles round trip and has some stairs.
Bernal Heights Park
Bernal Heights Park, south of the Mission, is a grassy hilltop with a short walk to a view over downtown, the bay and Twin Peaks. It is popular with dog owners and at sunset.
Dolores Park

The upper southwest corner of Mission Dolores Park looks over the park’s lawns toward downtown. It is the easiest of these views to reach and comes with food and coffee nearby in the Mission.
Alamo Square
The hill in Alamo Square Park frames the Painted Ladies against the downtown skyline.
The de Young tower
The observation level of the de Young’s Hamon Tower in Golden Gate Park is free and looks over the park toward the Pacific and downtown. It is open when the museum is open.
From the water
A ferry ride gives you the skyline, the bridges and Alcatraz from the bay. The ferry to Sausalito passes close to Alcatraz and Angel Island, and the trip back has a skyline view.
